Barefoot,
under its original name of Qetesh, was formed in 1999 by dance teacher Steffi Colbert and her husband Richard. Steffi and
some of her more advanced students decided to set up a dance performance group.
Richard, a dancer with Grand Union Morris
and fellow Morris dancer Chris Turner set up a band of local musicians and percussionists who worked hard to develop their
own original sound made up of a fusion of western and Arabic influences.
When we began in 1999 Barefoot were the
only tribal belly dance troupe performing with their own live band anywhere in the UK.
Each peformer has created their own bright and
colourful costume which takes inspiration from many cultures, ancient and modern from around the world. Impressive headdresses,
jewelery and individual tribal make-up create a strong, vibrant and striking look.
Barefoot Bellydance performs using a number of traditional props which include finger cymbals (zils), veils
and the tulwar (an eastern style sabre). The result is that no two shows are ever the same.
